Welcome to the Utah Democratic Legislature Fund
(D PAC). We are a political action committee designed to assist Democrats who are expected to be
in close races for election to the
Utah Legislature.
Most financial contributions to state legislative candidates are made by
corporations or associations. Recent legislative actions at both the federal
and state level are changing the face of campaign financing that make it
most advantageous for political organizations which raise funds directly
from individuals. D PAC intends to raise the bulk of its funds for
candidates from the general public through the mail, telephone and internet.
Indeed, we may be the only political action committee whose focus is the general interest of all Utahns, and not special
business or social interests.
In this past election D PAC raised nearly $30,000 from
over 900 individuals. It was able to provide financial help to 19 candidates
for the legislature from the top of Utah right down through St. George. All
of the new Democratic faces in the legislature received help from D PAC including
State Senator Fred Fife and State
Representatives
Ross Romero, Mark Wheatley and
Tim Cosgrove.
Our long-term goal is to elect a majority of Democrats
in the Utah Legislature. While the Democratic gains in the legislature from
the recent election were modest, D PAC was able to help the progressive
agenda move forward. This was not a one shot effort for 2004. It may take a
number of years for us to reach our goal. We are just getting started.
Over the next year, we will be monitoring the 2005
general session of the legislature and we will begin to seek candidates to
run for office in 2006. 2006 will mark the "six-year-itch" in the
Bush
administration when
Democrats can be expected to make strong gains at the
state and local level. If you know of good potential candidates or have an
opinion on how the issues of the next year can be used to enhance Democratic
gains, please let us know. We want to hear from you.
If you want to hear from us, please fill out the form
on the "Get Involved" page or make a
financial contribution and give us your
e-mail address. We can reach our goals by working together to be a greater
force than just the sum of our individual efforts.
